Why think SMART when you can think SMUTTIE! SMART goals don’t work. They never really did. People have been sold the lie that they are a motivational tool but actually they were first designed as a management tool to increase efficiency. And far from being a tool to inspire and promote creativity they are most often used by managements to control, make unreasonable demands and beat people up when they don’t hit them, which most of the time they don’t! Some elements of the SMART acronym make total sense but as a whole the system is flawed so don’t have a SMART goal, have a SMUTTIE one! SMUTTIE goals are where the action is! What is a SMUTTIE Goal? It Breaks down like this:
Systemised: To systemise we first to identify the actual system that will help us achieve our goals.
Measurable: Yes, Measurable is still here! But we are not measuring our results but the system that supports us achieving our results.
Uncomfortable: Believe me when I say the more uncomfortable you make yourself the better your life is going to be.
Tactical:
What are my long term and short term plans to achieve what I want to achieve?
Targeted
What’s the target? The target is time. You need to decide at the outset at what time, on what day, in what month of what year do you want to have achieved your goal.
Most importantly they need to be
Inspirational:
Your goal has to truly inspire you. It must feed into your dream, your bigger picture and your perfect life.
Emotional:
It is emotional attachment to our goals that drives us to achieve them.
These last two elements are what will really inspire you to achieve your dreams.
So the next time you have a goal and you want to actually achieve it get SMUTTIE!
